Sub Zero by Era

Sub Zero been to Nationals eleven times, Quarters six times and Semifinals once. Each Nationals berth and every win at Natties was hard fought. We know that one visit to semis is no great shakes. The 2009 season was the first year Sub Zero did not qualify for the National tournament after 11 consecutive trips to the tournament in Sarasota, FL.

The following sections feature Sub Zero’s history told by former captains and veterans as well as a photo gallery of the players from that era. They describe the important moments in Sub Zero history. Enjoy.  The abrupt end to the 2009 season has left an uncomfortably warm feeling inside Sub Zero's frozen core.  The post 2008 years will no doubt be the start of a new era--stand by for an update here as well.

Thanks to the many photographers whose work we have borrowed for this gallery, including Josh Wilhelm, Seth Grossinger, the Kuettner family, Robin Davies, Bill Elsinger, and Scobel Wiggins.

The Early Years

TurtleBackdoor Game, Regionals 1997 -- Our last game at Regionals in 1997 in Lexington was the club's most important game. It was the "game to go" and we lost the game to a bunch of fuckers from Indiana (pumphouse 5). But we were close - almost won - and by the end of the game there was belief in our system, the man and buddy, and in our future.

Worlds 2002

This was literally the first tourney that Sammy and I captained the team together. Eventually, 28 guys were there with Snowmen on the jersey. The first couple of days were routine, we basically won everything ~17-12 using everyone at all times. Figuring it was better to win by 4 or 5 using everyone than to win by 10 and just use the top 18.

The Rebirth

Regionals 2005 Finals

The biggest victory to me was 1999 quarters, the only time we made semis. The biggest losses were the 2005 quarters to Furious and the 1999 semis loss to Condors. Since those have been gone over two of them were losses, which makes them tough for me to consider "great", I'll talk about the regional final of 2005.

Dan HeijmenRegionals 2007 vs. Machine

Pouring Rain. No seriously, pouring rain. Rain that was beating the disc down as it flew through the air, and rain that succeeded in suctioning our jersey’s to our bodies. There was no much water streaming off of me, that the only way I could prove to my teammates that I was in fact pissing myself was for them to look down and see the faintly yellow stream dribbling off my shorts.

Team Photos

subzero 1998A collection of team photos from the early renditions of Sub Zero to the most recent team in 2008.  Some of the faces span many years, some only one or two, some left only to return and yet two of the faces have been there through it all: Gary and Steve.
